Who Will Pull on the Series Champion Jerseys?
Five rounds of the ABRA Road Race Series down and one last to go for 2010. On August 14 in Rowlesburg, WV the last chance to get series points and move up the standings will conclude. There are some really great point races going on in some of these classes. In the Men’s Master (40+) category Gunnar Shogren (139 points), Brian Wieczorek (129 points) and Gerry Pflug (116 points) are in a three way dog fight to see who will be champion. A win by any of the three riders and they could take over the top spot.
The Men’s Masters (50+) class has a similar situation with Jeff Nunes (106 points), Stephan Vance (94 points), Kean Bird (92 points), Mike Spinnler (87 points) and James Sota (82 points) are all still in the hunt for the series winner jerseys. John Cotter looks to have it all sewn up in the Men’s Cat 1/2/3 series, however the other 4 series podium spots are wide open. Ben Kuhlman who is currently holding down the second spot will be looking for a good finish at the last race to secure his series position. Jay Moglia, Samson McHugh, Brian Flaherty, Steve Cummings and a host of others just need one last good performance and they can play spoiler to some folks dreaming of making the series podium.
Matthew Phillips is looking to capture the Men’s Cat 4/5 crown at Appalachia Visited, but Chad Hill, Bill Slutz, Dereck Clark and a host of others are looking to bump the 16 year old from the top. In the men’s Cat 5 field it is down to Jeff White and Chris Jones to fight it out for the top spot but the series podium spots behind them still have yet to be decided.
In a few classes however congratulations are already in order as the top spot has already been decided. Betsy Shogren, Kyle Kukieza and Tina Kirk have already earned the right to pull on their series championship jerseys at Appalachia Visited due to their stellar performances in 2010.

The town of Rowlesburg, WV has opened its doors for us to invade on Aug 14th. Besides a stellar 59 mile race course with near perfect roads, the town has a few extra treats in store for us. After the race the town will be cooking up some vittles for us including hamburgers, fries, veggie wraps and chicken sandwiches plus coleslaw and drink (water, soft drink, etc.) for only $5.00. The fun will not just end with the race; race parking, staging and awards will held be at Rowlesburg River Front Park and the town wants us to take full advantage of the park by allowing up to take a dip in the river after the race to cool off. So don’t forget your towel!

Cross Season is Right Around the Corner!
It’s Hard to believe but in just two short months it will be time to break out the cyclocross gear for what seems to be one of the most anticipated cross seasons ever around here. Here at ABRA, we have put together a seven race series featuring some great new races plus some of your old favorites. Washington, Waynesburg, Morgantown, Lost Creek and Bruceton Mills will be the sites for our 2010 racers.
This year these races will all be USAC sanctioned events so make sure you have your license or you can just buy a one day license at all the events on race day. To qualify for the series you must compete in 4 of the 7 events, however your BEST 5 races will make up your series points total.
Also new for 2010 will be a Top Team Competition. Each team can have as many members on its roster as they want, however, only the top 3 males and top female will score points for that team for each race. The number of points awarded will be the same as the number each rider is awarded in series points for the class they race. A team roster MUST be presented or emailed to ABRA BEFORE the first race on Oct. 2 to be eligible.
2010 ABRA Cyclocross Series Classes:
Men’s Cat 1/2/3
Men’s Cat 3/4

ABRA Contest #7 - For a Swiftwick Bag-o-Goodies!
The “how many things in a jar” games seem to be very popular seeing that we had over 200 guesses for the last contest. So let’s try it again! You are playing for two pair of the best socks on the planet and a set of arm warmers from the great folks at Swiftwick. And away we go….
How many Hammer Nutrition Products can be found in the container?

Please email me your guess as always the first correct guess is the winner. If no one picks the correct amount before next month’s news letter the closest to the correct number will be awarded as the winner, only one entry per person please. Good luck!
Thanks again to our 2010 ABRA Series Sponsors!
