Hilly Billy Roubaix Coming Up June 26th!
This event is going to be stupid fun!
What is the Hilly Billy Roubaix?  Well, good question.  It is part road racing, part endurance racing and a whole lot of fun!  The 70 mile one loop course will take you on the roads less traveled around the Morgantown, WV area.  The surface of the roads consist of 60% paved roads, 38% gravel roads and 2% bombed out roads.  Road conditions may include missing bridges, car-sized potholes, gravel, mud, black top, cow paths, and maybe a piece of road kill or two. Take a look at some of these roads in the Hilly Billy Roubaix Video.  There will be three aid stations at miles 19, 38 and 58.  Finishing times could be 6 plus hours for some riders.  Your road bike fitted with wide tires or cross bikes are recommended for this event. **Special notes from our friend Gunnar Shogren!** - "And I will say this only once more. I would not run smaller than a 30mm tyre. If you run a 28 you will be severely limited on the downhills. They needn't be knobby (for the current conditions) but you will need the volume. I don't think tubulars would be very smart either. DO NOT WEAR ROAD SHOES FOR THIS EVENT!
First 50 registered receive an event t-shirt and there will be free post-race pizza and beverages to all racers!  Be a part of the first Hilly Billy Roubaix and register now for only $50. Race day registration will be $60 and goes from 8:30AM until 9:45AM.

Great Turn-Out at Tour of Tucker.
The Tour of Tucker County Road Race APRRS #3 presented by Fat Tire Cycle was a huge success as more than two hundred participants registered for the event.  From all accounts the Men's Cat 1/2/3 race was full of fireworks as Nick Waite (Kenda p/b Gear Grinder), Jeff Schalk (Trek Co-Op) and Joe Dombrowski (Haymarket Bicycles/HomeVisit) took turns attacking each other on the course.  A group of 10 or so reached the base of the Sugarlands climb together but in the end 19 year old Dombroski edged out Waite on his home turf. For the Women's 1/2/3 field it was Laurel Larsen (Syn-Fit Race Team) taking the victory over Betsy Shogren (Dynamic Physical Therapy Cycling).  Larson is earning a reputation as excellent climber as this was her sixth road win of the early season.  Big shout out to Ted Harris (ABRT), sorry we left you off the Master 50+ podium! And The Leaders Are?!

After the great racing from rounds 1, 2 and 3 we have some good points races going on.  Nick Waite (Kenda p/b Gear Grinder) with 65 points is holding down the Men's Cat 1/2/3 series lead.  In second is Brad Dodson (Eastern Panhandle Bicycle Company) with 52 points.  Just 2 months prior to Tour of Tucker County Dodson was a Cat 5 racer -- now look at him flying as a Cat 3.  Nice work, sir.  Third in the Men's Cat 1/2/3 field is Jacob Tremblay (Team Nature's Path/3Sports) after his solid 5th place finish at ToT.  Matthew Phillips (Haymarket Bicycles/HomeVisit) tops the Men's Cat 4/5 standings with 72 points.  Phillips has been able to score points in every race so far this season unlike his opponents.  Chad Hill (Unattached) holds the second spot followed by Jason Draper (Global Ride Racing) in third with 42 points.  Gerry Pflug (Salsa/SPK/Pro Bikes) is looking to defend his 2009 Master 40+ and holds the current points lead in the class with 89 points over Dynamic Physical Therapy Cycling's Gunnar Shogren.  Third for the Men's Masters 40+ is Mike Brown who is coming off an impressive win at ToT.  The closet battle is in the Men's Cat 5 race where Chris Jones with 65 points holds a a two point lead over Jeff White (Joey's Bike Shop). Ad Bax (Clean Currents p/b Don Beyer Volvo) has used two wins in the series to move him to the front of the Men's Masters 50+ points race, while Stephan Vance (Wheelcraft) is following behind in second with 56 points..   Kyle Kukieza hold the Junior's class lead with Michael Myers in second. In the Women's Cat 1/2/3 it is Betsy Shogren (Dynamic Physical Therapy Cycling) leading the way with 95 points.  Laurel Larsen(Syn-Fit Race Team) and Anna Barensfield (ladies First Racing) are tied for second with 35 points. Look for it all to go down to the finals at the Appalachia Visited Road Race APRRS #6 on August 14th.  2009 Women's Cat 4 Series Winner Patricia George (Steel City Endurance) is looking to retain her title one more time.  However newcomer Tina Kirk is the new pionts leader with 78 points, while George is second.  Third place in the standings belongs to Laura Kelley (Motown Womens Cycling Club) with 49 points.   For a complete list of the series standings please visit ABRAracing.com.

Coming up next!
The next two ABRA Road Series events are being promoted by Thad Kelley.  First up will be his Smokin' On The Tygart (Chili Cook-Off Road Race) APRRS# 4 on June 19th.  This new event for 2010 will consist of one 33 mile loop, with the Men's Cat 1/2/3 doing 2 loops.   On July 3rd Thad will be hosting the always popular Barbour Detour.  You can register and find more information for both events on-line at BikeReg.com or follow the link on ABRAracing.com

I return as APRRS Series race promoter on August 14 for the Appalachia Visited Road Race - APRRS #6 which is the Series Championship and WV State Championships.  This race like my past two events will most likely sell out in the Cat 4/5 and Cat 5 classes.  So do not wait until the last minute or you mighht get left out of the fun! I will also be hosting Appalachian Time Trial Championships on September 18. This event will put each rider against the clock and will also serve as the WV State Time Trial Championships.

ABRA Contest #7

So it is time for a new contest and a new prize.  This month our friends at Performance Coaching Service are offering up a Free Bike Fit Session.  Coach Rob Acciavatti will evaluate the machine, the athlete, and their interaction to determine the position which maximizes comfort and performance. If you want to get perfectly fitted to your bike maybe you should have your hand at this contest. What to take you cycling to a new level? Coach Acciavatti has two open spots for his coaching services, contact him now before they are gone. Ok and now on with the contest!

In the photo below, how many Hammer Gels are pictured?  Only one submission per person and the first correct answer wins.  If no one gets the correct number by the next newsletter the person guessing closest without going over will be declared the winner. Good Luck!
